The Beverly City Council reopened a public hearing on Monday on Order 255, a proposal to name the Beverly Recreation Office building in honor of Gail Jean Commodity.
City Clerk Lisa Kent read the public hearing notice, and Bruce Doid, the recreation director referenced in the order, addressed the council, describing Commodity’s 55 years of service in the Recreation Department and the impact she had on thousands of children and families. Doid said it was ‘‘amazing’’ that someone would begin working right out of high school and remain dedicated to the department for more than five decades.
No members of the public requested additional comment during the hearing. The council then closed the public‑hearing portion and referred Order 255 to the Committee on Legal Affairs for further discussion and formal action by that committee.
The referral means the committee will review the naming proposal and bring a recommendation back to the full council at a future meeting; no final naming decision was made on Dec. 15.
