Summary
Ann Marie Scalzo of the Kraken’s 1 Roof Foundation described the group’s three impact pillars (ending youth homelessness, environmental justice, and Access to Play), said the foundation has raised over $4.5 million to support youth housing initiatives and serves 700+ kids in programming the team hopes to expand at the proposed Kirkland facility.
Ann Marie Scalzo, speaking for the Seattle Kraken’s 1 Roof Foundation, described the foundation’s philanthropic focus and what it would bring to a proposed Kraken iceplex in Kirkland.
Scalzo said 1 Roof concentrates on three pillars: ending youth homelessness, advancing environmental justice and increasing access to play for children who face barriers to participation. She told the luncheon that the foundation has raised more than $4.5 million to date to help youth facing housing insecurity and that the foundation currently provides financial assistance and programming support for more than 700 children at the Kraken Community Iceplex.
“We work to reduce barriers and open doors for low-income youth and families,” Scalzo said, listing partnerships with Title I schools and nonprofit groups including the Refugee Women’s Alliance. Scalzo described plans to expand programming and facilities access at a new Kirkland venue if the project proceeds.
Scalzo also said the 1 Roof board is independent and includes about 50% external members, and she emphasized that the foundation approaches work in partnership with frontline communities and local nonprofits rather than acting alone.
Kraken and city presenters framed the foundation’s commitments as one part of the broader public-benefit package the team proposes for the Kirkland site. Scalzo closed her remarks by screening a short video about the foundation’s work and inviting questions about program plans.
