Hancock County Commission recognizes Weirton as No. 2 retirement destination; state, federal officials congratulate city

The Hancock County Commission unanimously approved a recognition of the city of Weirton on Dec. 11 after a series of congratulatory remarks from federal and state representatives and local officials.
Shay Potter, representing U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito’s office, congratulated the city and quipped, “What is going on in Michigan? Because Weirton obviously should have been number 1.” State Senator Laura Wakeham Chapman presented a recognition from the state senate and praised Weirton’s performance on retiree-relevant criteria including quality of life, affordability and retiree tax friendliness. Delegate Mark Satesla, who represents much of Weirton in the House of Delegates, recalled long ties to the city and lauded its public safety and affordability.
Mayor Dean Harris accepted the recognition on behalf of city staff and community partners, highlighting recent volunteer efforts such as large holiday meal drives for seniors and shut-ins. The chair invited city leaders (including assistant Brandy Brock, city manager Mike Adams and assistant city manager Deanne Pulliam) to be recognized alongside the commission. The motion to approve the recognition passed with a unanimous vote.
No county policy or funding action accompanied the recognition; it was a ceremonial acknowledgment of Weirton’s listing by U.S. News & World Report.
