Cape Coral — The Lee County Clerk briefed Cape Coral City Council on a free service that alerts property owners when a document bearing their recorded name is filed with the county recorder.
The clerk described the Property Fraud Alert system as a free alternative to private services such as TitleLock; it emails registrants within 24 hours when a document in their name is filed. Registration, the clerk said, requires four fields: first name, last name, email address entered twice to avoid errors, and confirmation of the email address. The clerk emphasized that some filings such as refinancing or notices of commencement are legitimate, but if a registrant receives an unexpected email they should contact the Cape Coral Police Department for investigation and possible assistance in coordination with the county.
Council members thanked the clerk and suggested the city’s communications office and the city manager help publicize the QR code and registration information so residents can protect themselves.
Council did not take formal action; the presentation was informational.
