Weston Board hears consultants on middle‑school options, targets November referendum

Weston Board of Education members heard a high‑level briefing from Colliers and SLAM on Wednesday night about options to address long‑running capital needs across the district’s four school buildings, with particular focus on the middle school and how state reimbursement rules affect project choices.

The board chair, Debbie, opened the special meeting and said the purpose was “to refresh … old and new board members” on studies since 2017 and to hear consultants outline the state grant process and next steps toward a potential referendum and grant application.

Colliers and SLAM summarized prior studies (Silver/Petrucelli, Tecton and others), said SLAM’s Phase 1 structural review indicates the existing middle‑school structure is sound and could be renovated, and described the state grant mechanics that determine reimbursement. Using the district’s highest projected enrollment (547 students), consultants said the state’s space standard would reimburse roughly a building of about 93,000 square feet; the current middle school is approximately 147,753 square feet and is therefore oversized for the state’s standard, which reduces the effective reimbursement rate for the district unless the project is right‑sized or a waiver is granted.
