Newport honors Capt. Paul Kunkel for 27 years of community policing

"There will be no other Newport police officer as well known as Captain Paul Kunkel," Chief Fangman said, listing Kunkel’s 27 years of service and his leadership roles overseeing events from National Night Out to neighborhood cleanups and mentoring programs.
Chief Fangman recounted Kunkel’s service record, community programs he organized and awards he received, and described him as a persistent presence who engaged with vulnerable residents and local institutions. Capt. Kunkel, who said he had been employed since 11/16/1998, accepted the shadowbox and thanked colleagues, family and leadership.
Kunkel spoke briefly about the personal sacrifices of policing and singled out his wife and colleagues for thanks. The board recessed for a short photo period after the presentation.
No formal policy actions were associated with the recognition; the item was a ceremonial tribute.
