Board honors student athletes and praises community Toys for Tots effort

The South Colonie Board of Education opened its Dec. 9 meeting by recognizing fall athletes and community contributors.
The board honored Owen Connolly, a senior on the boys cross-country team who holds several school course records and plans to attend the University of Wyoming to study kinesiology. Coaches and board members praised his accomplishments, and the board invited him and coaches forward for a photo.
Officials also recognized the modified and junior varsity field hockey teams and coaches, noting the program's growth since the district added JV in 2024 and has ambitions to add a varsity level in the near future.
Superintendent Dr. Perry and others thanked parents, staff and community partners for their support of Toys for Tots; Dr. Perry said the district collected more than 2,500 toys at eight sites this season and that volunteers involved in the effort will be publicly recognized in January.
Board members also acknowledged other community efforts such as coat donations from the town board and participation from the police department and the high school yearbook club.
