The Ravenna City Board of Education voted to close West Main Elementary at the end of the 20252026 school year and to authorize the sale of the former Tappan Elementary building during its regular meeting.
Superintendent presented Resolution 25-11, saying the closure would move third- and fourth-grade students "to a different building where we have room" and was proposed to "help address anticipated budget shortfalls and anticipated enrollment patterns." The resolution specifies implementation or repurpose/sale to take effect on June 30, 2026. The board moved, seconded and adopted the resolution by roll call with all members recorded as voting yes.
On the following agenda item the superintendent and staff recommended authorization to sell Tappan Elementary, described in the meeting as a former school currently under lease. The board approved the authorization to sell the building after a motion and seconded roll call vote in which all listed members voted yes.
Both actions were presented as part of the district's efforts to align facilities with projected enrollment and financial constraints. The superintendent characterized the West Main closure as "the more efficient use of a lot of school district revenues and resources." The board did not discuss alternative mitigation steps in detail during the meeting; staff indicated further administrative steps to implement the closure and sale will follow.
Next steps: staff to implement the closure timetable and proceed with the sale authorization process per board direction.
