Road commission delays Stokes Ferry bridge work after utility-line issues

At the Dec. 4 meeting, Speaker 2 said planned work on the Stokes Ferry bridge is set to begin Jan. 5 but crews found conflicts with a water line and a gas line that could be damaged if work proceeds without further inspection.
"They're thinking of waterline...the waterline in the creek itself ... is only a foot deep," Speaker 2 said, raising concern that construction access near the piers could break the line. He said the commission will meet Monday or Tuesday with contractors to determine a safe plan and that signage and boards will be placed next week to give "probably at least a month of notification" before any full shutdown.
Speaker 4 urged staff to coordinate with Mount Juliet and other nearby jurisdictions on detour routes and traffic impacts, noting that annexation and local traffic patterns could concentrate traffic through Central Pike and Posey Hill during any closure. Speaker 1 offered public‑relations support to notify affected residents and schools.
The commission did not set a final closure date at the meeting; staff will report back after the Monday/Tuesday meeting with contractors and utility representatives and said they would update the public and partner jurisdictions before the closure would proceed.
