Palos Park Mayor Nicole Milvitz Walters on Monday summarized the village's traffic-enforcement efforts on US Route 45 (LaGrange Road), saying local officers, the Cook County Sheriff's Police and state troopers all patrol the corridor and that the village deploys dedicated traffic-enforcement resources to reduce crashes and nuisance driving.
"From July 2024 to July 2025, our officers made 914 stops on LaGrange Road alone and wrote 772 violations," Walters said, citing enforcement activity focused on a roughly one-mile stretch of LaGrange Road within the village limits. She said officers patrol neighborhoods several times a day and respond to calls for service including crashes, domestic disputes and wellness checks.
Walters also addressed resident complaints about vehicle noise and occasional reports of drag racing. She said officers and Chief Miller were on scene after a 911 call that reported racing and that "there was not any racing" when officers were present. She said loud mufflers are ticketed when found in conjunction with another violation, such as speeding.
The mayor described traffic volumes on the village's busiest corridors, citing Southwest Highway at about 16,000 vehicles per day, Route 83 at roughly 12,000, and US Route 45/LaGrange Road at about 34,000 vehicles per day. Walters said the village manages more than 50 miles of roadway and uses speed trailers frequently to make motorists aware of posted speeds.
Walters said the village received dedicated enforcement hours through Illinois Department of Transportation traffic enforcement grants and that most of those hours were deployed to LaGrange Road. She described the "Arrive Alive on Route 45" initiative — a coordinated, multi-jurisdictional effort that targets the so-called fatal four violations over concentrated enforcement periods and includes participation from neighboring police departments.
Walters listed participating agencies as including the Palos Park Police Department, Cook County Sheriff's Police, Illinois State Police, La Grange Park and La Grange police departments, Hodgkins, Orland Park, Orland Hills, Tinley Park and Mokena. She said those agencies work together "to reduce fatal accidents."
