The Farmington City Council on Dec. 15 approved appointments that move the Farmington Fire Department toward a hybrid staffing model with full-time coverage. City staff told the council that nine new positions were included in the 2026 budget and that the council was being asked to appoint seven of those positions, contingent on the council’s approval.
City staff named the following proposed appointments in the meeting materials: Tyler Buoney, Matthew Janz (transcript spelling varies), and Caitlin Scholl for full-time firefighter positions; Matthew Deneen, Brian Hanson, and Steven Karsten (transcript spelling varies) for full-time fire captain positions; and Samantha Hazelrigg as human resources manager. Staff said six of the seven appointees were present at the meeting and that all would start employment on Jan. 5, 2026, pending council approval. Chief Price described the change as "an historic event" and said the department will place full-time members on three shifts to provide 24-hour, seven-day coverage; staff said recruits will attend an internal academy before moving onto 48-hour shifts beginning Feb. 1, 2026.
A councilmember moved to approve the appointments and the motion was seconded. The council recorded affirmative responses during roll-call segments and the appointments were approved. Council members offered congratulations and asked for patience as overnight and logistical arrangements are finalized.
