Edina council adopts statement of solidarity with Somali American residents

Mayor Hovland read the prepared statement noting that "dehumanizing language can lead to discriminatory behavior and policies, and it has no place in a healthy democracy." The statement says Somali Americans are "an integral part of Edina" and honors their contributions across professions and civic life.
Councilmembers moved the item in unison; the motion carried without dissent. Community leaders in the audience expressed appreciation. "When we were attacked as a community... our neighbors stood up for us," said Assad Dahir, who thanked council for the show of support. Sharmarka Yousuf said the statement and community response reflect "Minnesota nice" and the reasons many Somali families choose Edina.
Council communications staff will publish the statement on the city website and pursue broader media distribution as appropriate.
