Mount Vernon City Council voted to adopt Resolution 2025-132 authorizing the safety‑service director to acquire Axon Taser 10 conducted energy devices and related equipment and services for the Mount Vernon Police Department.
Police leadership told council the department’s current devices were purchased in 2014 and are now at end of life: parts and batteries are no longer supported by the manufacturer. The chief said the department applied for a Justice Assistance (JAG) grant and budgeted for the devices in the department’s 2026 budget as a backup if grant money is not awarded.
The chief presented a five‑year payment quote that he described as approximately $154,000 (about $30,800 a year); he later said the package had been trimmed to roughly $147,300, which he said equates to about $30,000 a year. The chief said the program of 35 devices would outfit patrol and detectives and include maintenance, batteries, cartridges, training and warranties, and that the first payment would not be due until February after any contract execution. He also noted the contract includes language allowing council to withdraw the appropriation and to terminate if council later declines the expenditure.
A councilmember recounted a recent Citizens’ Police Academy demonstration showing how the devices operate; other council comments framed the devices as de‑escalation tools that can reduce the chance of an injury during confrontations. The resolution was moved, seconded and recorded as adopted.
