Bruceville-Eddy EDC to push ahead on comprehensive plan, schedules January workshop; urges sidewalks, streetlights and ordinance review

Facing imminent growth and developer interest, the Bruceville-Eddy EDC voted to accelerate work on a comprehensive plan and scheduled a public workshop in January to draft recommendations rather than wait on an uncertain grant.
President Darren Weaver said the board could not afford to wait years for sewer and grant timelines: “I don't think we can await when we have sewer almost finished and businesses already coming to sit around and wait another 2, 3 years for a comprehensive plan.” C.W. Wharton agreed to serve as the point person for the project.
Board members emphasized infrastructure items — sidewalks, streetlights and crosswalks — as safety priorities tied to upcoming residential developments and increased traffic. Directors discussed using available grant programs such as 'Safe Routes to School' to fund sidewalks where applicable and asked city council to review ordinances to require pedestrian and lighting infrastructure as development conditions.
The board noted the incoming city manager, Lawrence Cutrone, will start Dec. 1, and agreed to coordinate with him before advancing major expenditures or vendor contracts. Members also instructed staff to bring forward maps and developer materials (street plans) to inform the workshop.
The workshop will be publicized as required for a public meeting; directors set Feb. 17, 2026, as the next regular quarterly meeting date while leaving the rest of 2026 tentative pending coordination with city leadership.
