Local officers commission recommends modest pay increases for Mason mayor and council

"My name is John Vircher. I'm the chair of the local officers compensation commission," Vircher said. He told the council the commission calculated a 5.53% inflation change between 2023 and 2025, and applied that percentage to the existing per-occurrence rates. Using that method the commission proposed raising council pay from $72 to $76 per occurrence and mayoral pay from $84 to $89 per occurrence. The commission voted unanimously in favor of the recommendation.
Under the process described at the meeting, the council has 30 days from the commission's formal filing to reject the determination; if the council does not reject it within that period, the change will take effect beginning with the next term for those offices. One council member asked whether the increase would affect currently serving officials; Vircher said any change would apply to subsequent terms following the next election.
A council member later asked that staff prepare a resolution for the next meeting to consider rejecting the commission's determination; council discussion noted an individual member may also request agenda placement. No formal council vote on the recommendation was recorded at the Dec. 1 meeting.
Next steps: staff or an individual council member may place a draft resolution on a future agenda if the council seeks to reject the commission's recommendation within the 30-day window.
