Unidentified Speaker 1 said the council subgroups will run a pilot demonstration to reduce fuel loads on Mission Trail Nature Preserve’s Sarah Trail and will drive part of the city evacuation route to see how reduced fuel loads affect escaping the area. "We're going to be looking at a pilot demonstration, fuel load reduction in Mission Trail Nature Preserve on the Sarah Trail, Upper Sarah," Speaker 1 said.
The move is meant to test whether selective fuel reduction can improve evacuation access without diminishing the preserve's character. Speaker 1 emphasized a dual goal: "We want to make sure that, again, we're reducing fire fuel load, but we're also not reducing our character." The plan will involve a small council subgroup that Speaker 1 said includes two members of Forest Beach and one Planning Commission member.
Speaker 2 noted the subgroup will examine the pilot and related evacuation-route driving as part of a continuing wildfire-preparedness effort. No formal vote or funding detail was announced during the discussion; Speaker 1 presented the pilot as a next-step demonstration and operational review to inform future policy decisions.
The council participants scheduled further review next week as part of subgroup meetings and follow-up will be reported at future council or commission agendas.
