Mount Vernon Council honors departing members Iris Carrias, Richard Brocksmith and Gary Molnar

Mount Vernon — The City Council took time Dec. 17 to thank three outgoing members for their service.
Council member Iris Carrias—who identified herself during the meeting as representing Ward 1 Position 2—said she was stepping down after eight years and asked incoming council members to continue advocating for affordable housing and community support. "For affordable housing is what we most need in the community," Carrias said.
Mayor Donovan and colleagues also recognized Richard Brocksmith for eight years of service and early leadership on affordable housing and environmental issues, and council member Gary Molnar for multi-decade institutional knowledge and leadership through crises including a bridge collapse and the pandemic. Members presented gifts and invited photo opportunities.
Council member Martha Beattie offered extended remarks on Carrias’s outreach to Latino residents and her leadership, describing Carrias as a bridge to parts of the community previously less engaged.
The council adjourned at 7:50 p.m. and will reconvene with new members in January.
