Sandusky commission adopts prosecutor contract, wage increase, Battery Park approvals and playground purchase

At its final meeting of 2025 the Sandusky City Commission adopted several ordinances affecting contracts, employee pay and local development.
Prosecutor contract: The commission authorized the city manager to contract with the Erie County Prosecutor’s Office to provide prosecutorial services to the municipal court starting Jan. 1, 2026. Mister Hastings explained the county arrangement is expected to reduce the city’s costs by lowering health-care and PERS obligations tied to an in-house prosecutor; the contract includes an automatic one-year renewal unless either party gives 90 days’ notice and a six-month cancellation clause. The ordinance was adopted under suspension of the rules.
Wage increase: The commission approved an ordinance raising wages for the city’s non-probationary administrative employees and authorized the finance director to expend necessary funds. The motion carried after a recorded roll call; one commissioner recorded an abstention on a separate consent item earlier in the meeting.
Battery Park approvals: Commissioners approved a construction agreement with Battery Park Sandusky LLC for public improvements inside the Battery Park planned unit development and accepted the final plat for Battery Park at 701 East Water Street. Both ordinances were moved, voted and passed.
Playground equipment at Far Well Park: The commission authorized purchase and installation of playground equipment and amenities from GameTime DWA Recreation Inc., using the Omnia Partners purchasing program. Commissioners noted the existing equipment was installed in 1999 and that typical life expectancy for play structures is about 20–25 years; the city also has a 20‑year lease with Six Flags that relates to that park area. The ordinance passed under suspension and will take effect immediately as allowed by the city charter.

City Manager John Orzech also announced a $300 payroll-deduction donation from Commissioner Waddington to the city greenhouse and accepted an in-kind donation of kitchen supplies from the Hogarfe Foundation for Sunniski programs.
