Westbury students honored for regional music, art and inclusive athletics

Westbury Union Free School District officials used their Sept. 10 planning meeting to spotlight student accomplishments across music, visual art and adaptive athletics.
Director of Fine and Performing Arts Nydia Keffney announced four seniors — Miguel Hernandez, Jaden Marino, Makai Parker and Bazille Filangi — had been accepted into the Nassau-Suffolk Performing Arts Ensemble, a regional nonprofit program that offers advanced rehearsals and performance opportunities. Keffney also listed students whose artwork was selected for the New York State School Boards Association exhibition and named graduating and current high-school artists honored by the district.
Catherine Calhoun introduced three students selected to participate in Adelphi University's string orchestra preview day, describing a college-level rehearsal and performance opportunity for Sofia Barrios Guillencello, Gabriela Melgar Delgado and Alex Vargas. Superintendent/Presenter Doctor Chase praised the district’s educators and noted that some students were participating virtually via the chat.
Board members also recognized the STRIVE program’s high-school Challengers soccer team for an inaugural undefeated 4–0 season and thanked staff including Michael Mack, Provins and Kapsis for supporting inclusion and confidence-building for unique learners. Doctor Chase invited the community to the district’s Holiday Extravaganza next Tuesday, which will feature multiple student performances and light refreshments.
