Westbury board moves student commendations to the start of tonight’s meeting

The Westbury Union Free School District Board of Education voted unanimously Sept. 10 to move the commendation portion of tonight’s planning meeting to the start of the agenda so students and their families could leave earlier.
Board President Robert Traiano Jr. said he had received “one letter from a parent just asking if we can move the commendation section up, to the front of the meeting,” and asked for a motion to change the order for this meeting. Trustee Dr. Dickerson moved the change; Trustee Mateo Flores seconded. Trustees Flores, Dr. Dickerson, Vice President Floyd Ewing and Traiano all voted aye.
Traiano said the board will consider whether to make the order change permanent at a later meeting. No board member opposed the temporary adjustment, which organizers said was prompted by prior meetings in which long reports and public comment stretched late into the evening.
