MMSD board approves consent items, UW La Follette data agreement, tuition funding and donation

The Madison Metropolitan School District Board of Education on Dec. 15 unanimously approved routine consent items and several specific motions.
The board approved the minutes of the Nov. 24, 2025 regular meeting. President Nichols moved the minute-approval motion; it was seconded by board member Maya and carried unanimously with the student representative advisory vote recorded as "Aye." The full consent agenda passed unanimously after no further separations were requested.
The board approved a data-use agreement with the University of Wisconsin–Madison's La Follette School of Public Affairs to research policy options related to Act 42 (the state cellphone policy). Administrators said the partnership is a literature-review and research collaboration running through June 2026, and that budget or school-level cost implications would be clarified as the students' recommendations are developed; the motion passed unanimously.
The board approved an expenditure not to exceed $76,295.80 to pay spring 2026 tuition for participants in cohorts 5 and 6 of the district’s accelerated licensure and special-education Grow Your Own program. District staff described the program (launched 2018) as producing multiple licensed special-education educators with a three-year service commitment.
Board members unanimously accepted a $23,630.17 donation from the Randall Raccoon Rally to fund classroom furniture, technology and resources at Randall Elementary. The board thanked donors and volunteers.
On state association business, trustees debated proposed Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB) resolutions that included conflicting items on voucher funding decoupling. The board first rejected a motion to direct its delegate to approve items 1–12, then passed a revised motion directing the delegate to approve items 1–9, 11 and 12 and to oppose item 10 at the January 2026 convention.
