Two new directors sworn in as Bellevue board elects Phil Block president
Summary
Tracy Macklin and Jane Aras were sworn in as board directors and the board completed officer elections and committee appointments, choosing Phil Block as president and Carolyn Watson as vice president. Several committee and representative appointments were also confirmed.
The Bellevue School District Board of Directors swore in two new members and completed its annual organizational business, electing board officers and appointing representatives to standing committees.
Kelly Aramaki administered the oath of office to Tracy Macklin, who affirmed support for the U.S. and Washington state constitutions and her duties as director of District 3 for Bellevue School District No. 405 in King County. Jane Aras was subsequently sworn in for District 5. Both newly sworn directors offered brief remarks: Macklin said she was "humbled, excited and ready to roll up my sleeves for the work ahead," and Aras said she is focused on doing the work of the board.
The board then held its annual organization items. After nominations, Phil Block was elected board president for the coming year by roll-call vote; Carolyn Watson was nominated and elected vice president. The board also appointed Jane Aras as the legislative representative and named Tracy Macklin as lead representative to the Discipline Appeals Council; directors agreed to serve as alternates. Director Maitland was appointed to the Board Audit and Finance Advisory Committee to fill a vacancy.
Most appointments passed by voice vote or roll call with unanimous or near-unanimous support; several actions were recorded as "the ayes have it." The board also approved the consent agenda earlier in the evening.
What’s next: These leadership appointments take effect immediately for the ensuing year; the board will continue scheduled business, including a study session after a brief recess.
