National Action Network asks Lancaster to transfer Firehouse 6 to nonprofit for community hub

During the second public comment period at the Dec. 16 Lancaster City Council meeting, Pastor Kevin Brown of 900 E. King Street, speaking for the Lancaster City chapter of the National Action Network, urged the council to provide clarity about the status of 843 Fremont Street (Firehouse 6) and to consider transferring or selling the property to a nonprofit for community use.

"Firehouse 6 represents a rare opportunity for Lancaster to demonstrate those values in action," Brown said, describing a proposal to transform the historic building into a hub for cultural preservation, youth development, healing, civic engagement and intergenerational programming. Brown asked the council three specific questions: where the acquisition process stands, whether the city would consider accepting a minimal purchase price and whether transfer or grant of the facility to a qualified nonprofit remains under consideration. He said the organization's intent is to reinvest every dollar into programming and services.

Council President responded that the questions require longer answers and offered to follow up directly with Pastor Brown after the meeting. No formal council action or staff directive on Firehouse 6 was recorded during the meeting.

The request places Firehouse 6 on the council's radar as the city proceeds with administrative code implementation and personnel transitions; further public discussion or a formal agenda item will be required for any transfer, sale or disposition of the property.
