Policy committee recommends suite of policy updates to full Nash County board

The Nash County Public Schools policy committee voted to recommend a package of policy updates to the full school board after a staff review of substantive edits intended to align district rules with recent state laws and State Board guidance.

Mister Weber, presenting on behalf of district policy staff, summarized substantive changes to the student and parent grievance procedure (policy 1710), clarifying that grievance hearings will generally be closed but that the language now authorizes hearings to be open when required by the open meetings law. He also proposed tightening Section D7 of the employee grievance policy to require a grievant who intends to be represented by counsel to notify the appropriate school official "at least 3 days in advance" so the district can secure legal counsel.

Weber said revisions to policy 2125 (confidential information) were added to reflect a new state statute that limits public agencies from collecting or disclosing personal information identifying members, volunteers or donors to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, and that Internet-safety and responsible-use policies (3225/3200 series) were updated to comply with a recent statutory requirement (cited in presentation as HB 805) that boards adopt Internet safety rules limiting access to age-inappropriate material and restricting social-media use during classroom time except as teacher-directed.

After presentation and brief discussion about remote quorum language in policy 2302, the committee made a motion and voted to recommend agenda items numbered 3 through 19 to the full board for action next week. Committee members voiced their support by a voice vote and the motion carried.

Next steps: the recommended policies will appear on the full-board agenda for consideration and formal adoption. Staff said draft language for the remote-meeting/quorum clarifications will be brought back for committee consideration prior to first reading.
