Monroe awards downtown incentive grants to two small businesses

Monroe City Council voted on Nov. 25 to award downtown incentive grants under the Grove Monroe program to two businesses that applied for assistance with rental or upfit expenses.
Jeff Wells, speaking for downtown economic development, said Jam's Pizza & Wings (leasing at 104 S. Main St.) applied for a 50/50 matching grant and provided proof of more than $19,000 in qualifying upfit expenses; the downtown advisory board recommended $8,000 and staff recommended adopting the resolution and a budget amendment to appropriate funds.
Wells also presented a Grove Monroe application for Foyles and Faded Salon & Spa (leasing at 103–105 S. Haines St.). The applicant requested rental assistance and is eligible for up to $14,046 to be paid in two installments ($7,023 after six months and $7,023 after 12 months) with proof of rent payments required before funds are disbursed. The downtown advisory board and staff recommended approval and adoption of the resolution and budget amendment.
No members of the public signed up to comment against either application. Council moved to adopt the resolutions awarding the incentive agreements, to authorize the mayor to execute documents, and to adopt the budget amendments; motions were seconded and votes were called.
Council thanked the applicants for investing in downtown Monroe during the meeting’s discussion.
