Trustees reviewed three options for maintenance and operations, including building at Laramie Athletic Fields (estimated ~$2M), and a $1.075M transportation renovation with parts potentially covered by a transportation block grant; trustees asked staff for budget guidance and timelines for SFC approvals.
Randy, who oversees maintenance and operations, told trustees the district’s M&O staff and inventory are scattered across multiple sites—including an old bus garage and the transportation facility—creating inefficiencies and safety concerns.
His recommended site option would demolish the existing D‑Type stadium at Laramie Athletic Fields (LAF), replat available parcels and build a consolidated multipurpose maintenance and warehouse facility on the east portion of the site. Randy said a contractor quote from roughly a year earlier put that work near $2,000,000 but cautioned market rates could differ. He noted potential soil‑remediation risk at the Slade site but said utilities and truck access are already in place.
For transportation, Randy said current space is overcrowded (about 70 people in a space designed for roughly 30) and lacks equipment such as tire changers, balancers and indoor washing capability. He presented a renovation option that would create five maintenance bays, a dedicated parts room, battery safety space and two bays with lifts; the estimated renovation cost is about $1,075,000. Randy said an estimated $100,000 of equipment costs might be eligible for reimbursement through the transportation block grant.
Trustees asked whether demolition and new construction at LAF would be reimbursable by the state; Randy said SFC and legislative approval would be required and the SFC process could take about two years between approval and breaking ground. Trustees also discussed appraisals and whether LAF could be sold in parcels; staff said they would consult the district’s realtor about parceling options.
No vote was held. Staff expect to bring motions with budget figures for M&O/LAF options and transportation renovations to the board for action next week.
