The Mountlake Terrace Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Commission voted to recommend its revised Equity & Inclusion Plan to the City Council after a detailed review of community input and targeted edits to the draft.
Commission staff presented survey methodology and summarized results, saying most recommendations in section 7 received majority support while two items — community DEI training and establishing gender-neutral restrooms in all city buildings — drew lower support. The presenter said draft language was adjusted to clarify implementation steps, recruitment strategies and compliance with federal requirements.
Commissioners discussed mixed public feedback, including comments that described DEI efforts as unnecessary or “woke.” The presenter responded that certain practices referenced in the plan align with federal and state obligations and emphasized that the commission’s role is to recommend language for council consideration rather than mandate action.
After discussion about clarifying language on trauma-informed community engagement, translation/interpretation practices and defining WMBE outreach in contracting, Commissioner 6 moved to recommend the plan to council. The motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
Next steps: commissioners indicated they will seek placement of the plan on the council’s consent agenda and asked staff to prepare a short presentation for the council meeting. The commission recommended members consider attending council to offer public comment in support of the plan.
