Public hearing on lead carbonate mill site continued while preservation costs are evaluated

Bill Stuckey, representing Joy Mining Division, said he visited Silverton, met with the historical society and local stakeholders, and asked a county contractor to provide estimates for preservation work and barricades to prevent public access to unstable features. Stuckey said he expects cost proposals back to the historical society and the county and said he “foresee[s] a favorable outcome as we go.”
Commissioners emphasized public safety and the need for careful preservation planning. The board voted to formally continue the hearing to allow time for detailed cost estimates and follow‑up with the historical society and other stakeholders; no final action on remediation or preservation funding was taken at this meeting.
Staff will accept contractor estimates and return with options for barricades, preservation scopes and any recommended funding or permitting next steps.
