County officials and parks staff held a ribbon-cutting to mark the reopening of Wadsworth's skate park after a short closure for repairs and equipment replacement. An unidentified commissioner said the county closed the park in December (closure date not specified) and reopened it on Dec. 22 to allow replacement of "60% of the equipment you currently see behind me," including ramps and low 'grind' rails.
"This 24,000 square foot skate park has been serving the youth in Flagler County since 2000," the unidentified commissioner said, adding that the facility is the only skate park in the county and should be maintained and made available to skateboarders in the area. The commissioner also noted that the Flagler Beach Police Department patrols the site to help ensure skateboarder safety.
Mark Giblin, assistant director of general services who oversees Flagler County's parks and recreation department, described the work as upgrades intended to improve safety and accessibility. "This park has always been a special place for our community, and today marks an exciting step in making it even better," Giblin said, adding that the county removed old ramps and installed "new improved ones that are safer, more durable, and designed for many different skill levels." He also confirmed the new fencing and a facelift to the restrooms.
Giblin said the skate park work is part of a larger initiative by the parks and recreation department to "continuously enhance and upgrade all county-operated parks" and to provide "high quality, accessible spaces" for residents. He thanked staff, partners, residents, the county administrator and commissioners for their roles in completing the project.
The brief ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting and an invitation for residents to visit the reopened facility. No formal votes or policy actions were recorded in the transcript.
