FDOT narrows US 41/6 Mile Cypress options; overpass removed after public feedback and cost concerns

FDOT and its consultants updated the MPO on alternatives for the congested US 41 and 6 Mile Cypress intersection, presenting three concepts: connecting Old Gladiolus Drive to divert turning traffic, a US 41 overpass, and a displaced/crossover alternative similar to recent FDOT treatments.
Consultants said short-term lane and turn-lane modifications provided limited relief to projected 2050 delays. The modeled alternatives reduced severe delays substantially, but estimated construction and right-of-way costs ranged from about $70 million to $114 million. FDOT reported mixed public feedback: some favored the bypass or overpass, while residents of Parkside Condominium opposed connecting Old Gladiolus because it would introduce more traffic near their buildings.
"Based on that meeting, FDOT decided to eliminate the US 41 Overpass," the consultant said, citing high cost, complex temporary traffic control needs and inconsistency with planning objectives. FDOT plans micro-simulation work, continued design efforts and a preferred-alternative public hearing in 2026; design funding appears in the LRTP toward 2030 but FDOT said it may accelerate in-house design work.
Board members asked whether the project’s design should be accelerated relative to other priorities such as Burnt Store Road; staff replied both remain priorities and that the long-range plan adoption will allow staff to reexamine priority ordering.
