Florida Atlantic University seeks $70 million for health training facility; highlights R1 designation

Camilla Michalczyk, speaking for FAU leadership, said FAU was designated an "R1 very high research university" and is one of 21 universities nationally with both R1 and Opportunity University distinctions. She described three legislative priorities: an $80 million multidisciplinary health professions clinical training and research facility (FAU received $10 million last year for planning and is requesting $70 million in 2026), investments to recruit and retain faculty in AI, biomedicine, neuroscience, marine science and engineering, and continued funding for the Center for Educational Strategy and Innovation tied to FAU's lab schools. Michalczyk said the health building will be located on the Boca Raton campus and will serve students across FAU's campuses and that the sooner the state funds the project the more it reduces total costs over time. FAU indicated it will raise the remainder of the capital through philanthropy and other sources.
Next steps: FAU confirmed it will continue outreach to the delegation and legislative offices as it pursues the $70 million request in the 2026 session.
