Mitchell County approves $2,500 opioid-prevention grant for school curriculum

The Mitchell County Board of Supervisors voted Nov. 18 to allocate $2,500 from county opioid-settlement funds to pay for a school-based substance-use prevention curriculum, staff said.
A county staff member described the program as “an evidence based prevention and substance use prevention program” that will be delivered in selected classrooms, including fifth, seventh and ninth grades and in some sixth-grade classes across three local schools, and said the course runs about 10 days. The board moved and seconded the funding request and advanced it for approval.
Supporters told the board the curriculum aims to educate students about risk factors and mitigation strategies. No formal opposition was recorded during the board’s discussion. The board’s approval directs the opioid-settlement allocation to the contractor identified by staff for program delivery; the motion carried following the second.
Next steps: staff will coordinate with the school districts named in the program proposal to schedule classroom sessions and confirm which grades and sites will take part.
