Conservation department reports 403 programs, Gulf Wildlife Area acquisition and hydro-dam repairs

Conservation department staff briefed the Mitchell County Board of Supervisors on last year’s activities and budget picture. Highlights included the donation- and grant-funded acquisition of the Gulf Wildlife Area, which required site work and will need future stream and access repairs; the department said volunteers and grant funds made the purchase possible.
Staff reported the department ran more than 403 programs serving over 7,400 participants in the year. The department won third place in habitat improvements recognized by the Izaak Walton League for county wildlife improvements — marking several consecutive years in the program’s top-three placements. Facility work included lowering the reservoir and making repairs to the hydro dam intake.
On finance, the conservation department said revenue is down in some areas; it reported a roughly $15,000 shortfall at the recycling center and that the water-trail project was re-budgeted into fiscal 2025. The department also described plans to buy two new vehicles and retire two older vehicles (one already sold to the road department), and noted Mitchell County will host the District 2 conservation board meeting in January.
Board members asked for more detailed budget documents in advance of meetings. Conservation staff said the conservation board sets department salary increases by state code and that the department will present budgets that reflect board-approved salary motions.
