Supervisors approve purchase of Volvo chassis and winter maintenance equipment totaling about $364,000

The Board of Supervisors on Nov. 5 approved two purchases to equip a replacement county truck: a 2027 Volvo VHD 64F300 tandem-axle chassis from Gator of Des Moines for $155,256 and a dump body with front and wing plows, an underbody scraper, a V‑box salt/sand spreader with pre‑wet system and installation from Henderson Products for $208,636.16.
Paul Guilen, county engineer, said the county has had good results with Volvo chassis and recommended stainless-steel dump-body sides and a stainless V‑box sander to improve durability and reduce rebuild frequency. He noted a $3,500 tariff impact fee listed on the chassis quote and said Henderson will not be able to build the equipment until later in 2026; the county sought to order ahead for longer lead times.
Board members moved and seconded separate motions to approve the chassis purchase from Gator of Des Moines (to be paid from the FY2027 equipment budget) and to approve the Henderson Products equipment and installation; both motions carried on roll call.
The purchases will be assigned to Secondary Roads for fleet replacement; staff said ordering lead time makes advance purchase necessary.
