Council accepts HVAC bid for Tabernacle; fundraising concert planned to help pay for restoration

Rexburg City Council voted to accept the low bid from Doctor Heating and Plumbing for the Tabernacle HVAC project and heard an update on a planned fundraising concert intended to support ongoing Tabernacle restoration work.
Public Works Director Keith Davidson told councilors the city received two bids for the HVAC system and recommended the low bidder. Staff said $875,000 was set aside for the project and the low bid came in below that amount. Davidson explained the base bid covers the HVAC system while a bid alternate covers relocated plumbing for restroom work; demolition and additional framing will be bid separately as needed.
CFO Matt Nielsen and Brett from BYU‑Idaho described a proposed concert fundraiser at BYU‑Idaho’s iCenter, with a contract in place for John Schmidt of the Piano Guys and a title sponsorship commitment from Beehive Federal Credit Union of about $25,000–$30,000. Nielsen said the fundraiser was intended to raise contributions for the Tabernacle HVAC and subsequent basement construction. "After the artist fees and some direct costs are covered, then any proceeds would come back...towards projects at the Tabernacle," he said.
Council members asked whether the city would face net costs from the concert; staff said marketing or gala‑event expenses are possible but that sponsorship and projected ticket sales make the event a low‑risk proposition for the city. Council then moved and voted to accept the HVAC bid; the motion passed by voice vote.
Staff said additional demo and interior repairs for the basement will require later bidding and separate budget adjustments; the council approved the HVAC contract now to keep the project moving.
