During public comment at the Dec. 8 West Allis–West Milwaukee School Board meeting, resident John Monyell said his school portion of the property tax bill had risen dramatically and demanded an explanation of referendum-related figures.
Monyell identified himself and said his school tax bill was $1,060.43, which he described as a 38% increase year over year and part of a 48% increase over two years. He questioned whether the district had received $11,007.63 per pupil as cited in a public post by Dan O’Donnell and asked where an alleged $728,154.72 in unanticipated funds had gone if that $11,007.63 figure were accurate. He requested the board provide an explanation at the next regular meeting.
The board did not provide a detailed response during the public comment period; the superintendent said follow-up may be provided at the next regular board meeting.
Monyell’s comments raised questions about referendum accounting, the district’s per‑pupil revenue calculations and how state estimators factored into tax-rate changes. The board’s stated process for public comment does not permit debate during the comment period; the superintendent may follow up at a subsequent meeting.
