Barnstable County releases FY25 annual report; highlights child referrals, PFAS testing and shellfish support

Sonia Sheasley, communications manager for Barnstable County, introduced the FY25 annual report at the Dec. 17 meeting and outlined program and performance highlights now posted on capecod.gov.
Sheasley said Children's Cove received 278 referrals in FY25, a 74% increase over the prior period. The county water‑quality laboratory gained Massachusetts certification to test drinking water for PFAS and analyzed PFAS drinking‑water samples as part of its broader workload; the lab processed more than 20,000 samples across programs. Cooperative Extension secured grant funding to expand local food access and distributed 3,500,000 quahog seed and over 1,300,000 oyster seed to support local shellfish industry recovery.
Sheasley said AmeriCorps and county teams responded to marine mammal strandings during FY25 and noted dredging crews removed more than 81,000 cubic yards of material across eight towns to support navigation and coastal resilience. The annual report also includes new, accessible financial visuals intended to make budget and revenue information easier to use.
Sheasley described promotion plans — a press release, newsletter items and social media — and said departments contributed photographs and content for the public record. Commissioners thanked staff for the report and encouraged continuing accessible outreach.
