Village approves full-time fire marshal position description for 2026 budget

The Ashwaubenon Village Board on Dec. 16 approved a position description for a new non‑sworn, full‑time fire marshal included in the 2026 budget. Staff and Commander Backstrom described the role as requiring a strong fire background to conduct inspections, represent public safety in the community and participate in fire investigations alongside the Brown County Fire Investigation Team.
Trustees were told the village currently relies on contracted inspection services and part‑time inspectors; a full‑time fire marshal would strengthen inspection capacity, provide a local point of contact for building safety issues and assist with fire investigations. Staff said the village would retain short‑term contracted services while the new hire becomes operational.
A motion to approve the position description as presented (amended item) passed by voice vote.
Staff will proceed with recruitment per the approved description and coordinate with county partners on investigation responsibilities.
