El Paso County adopts Thanksgiving and Pearl Harbor Day proclamations; Honor Bell to toll after meeting

El Paso County commissioners on Nov. 18 adopted proclamations designating Nov. 27, 2025 as Thanksgiving Day in the county and Dec. 7, 2025 as Pearl Harbor Day. Both proclamations passed unanimously.
Vice Chair Holly Williams introduced the Thanksgiving proclamation and invited Travis Williams, president and CEO of Springs Rescue Mission, to speak. Travis Williams described Thanksgiving as a call to "notice the person in front of us" and urged community generosity toward neighbors facing loneliness and instability.
Later in the meeting the board approved a proclamation recognizing Pearl Harbor Day and welcomed a new Honor Bell for the Pikes Peak region. Johnny Drury, a docent at the National Museum of World War II Aviation, said the museum has extensive Pearl Harbor exhibits and encouraged residents to attend memorial events on Dec. 7. Karen Cantor of the Honor Bell Foundation said the new bell includes artifacts from local veterans, including a fragment of the USS Arizona donated by the family of Petty Officer Donald Stratton.
Both proclamations concluded with brief commissioner remarks thanking veterans and community organizations. The board planned an honor-bell ringing immediately after adjournment and invited the public to related ceremonies.
