Residents press Madison County supervisors for transparency over North Annex sale and veteran services

Multiple Madison County residents used public comment to press the Board of Supervisors for greater transparency about property sales, contracting and service changes.

Vicky Brenner, a Winterset resident, asked the board to "stop the sale of the North Annex immediately until full transparency is guaranteed," saying no thorough cost-benefit analysis and unanswered FOIA requests left taxpayers in the dark about budget impacts and service continuity. She also flagged selection of an out-of-state audit firm and repeated turnover in auditors as a matter requiring fuller public disclosure.

Thaddeus Smith, representing the Veterans Affairs board, read a written statement asking supervisors to reconsider proposed sale of the veterans' building and to avoid relocating veterans services to the courthouse. Smith said the current facility "has served as a vital resource for the veterans in our community" and argued a courthouse location would create barriers, citing lack of ADA compliance, reduced privacy and difficulties for veterans with mobility challenges.

Board members moved to "receive and file" public comments and agreed to gather additional documentation requested by callers and commenters, including where the audit RFP was published and which firms were contacted. Supervisors said some questions (for example, the public health 20/80 agreement with Warren County) will be addressed at a Board of Health meeting and through follow-up reports.

The board did not reverse any sale or contract decisions during the meeting but agreed to compile requested procurement and FOIA records and to put several contested agenda items on future meetings for further review.
