Commissioners follow administrator recommendation on sheriff budget amendment amid public concern and one opposed vote

The item includes a request for roughly $99,000 in equipment and facility items identified by the sheriff’s office (including stainless steel inmate toilets, electronic access upgrades and warehouse refrigeration), but commissioners and staff indicated they preferred resolving outstanding legal and budgetary questions before committing taxpayer funds.
A motion to follow the County Administrator’s recommendation (mover: Commissioner Airman; second: Vice Chairman Law) passed with one recorded ‘nay’ by Commissioner Moss. After the vote, members of the public told the board they wished such budget discussions had occurred earlier and more transparently; several speakers also defended the right to peaceful protest and urged careful stewardship of public funds.
The board did not adopt a final budget appropriation on this item at the meeting; staff indicated any further action would depend on clarification of outstanding legal matters and coordination with the Sheriff’s Office.
