Supervisors discussed the Iowa State Association of Counties' recommendation that counties contribute to pooled legal representation related to CO2 pipeline issues. One supervisor proposed contributing $500 now with an additional $500 contingent on a future call so the county would not have to repeat the approval process.
After brief discussion about whether all counties would participate and whether ISAC’s $25,000 target was realistic, a motion to contribute $500 now and hold $500 contingent was made, seconded and approved by recorded 'aye' votes from the board. A majority of supervisors indicated they believed participation protected local interests in potential litigation or regulatory matters.
The board did not set aside additional funds beyond the contingent authorization or further conditions at the meeting; staff were asked to follow ISAC guidance about payment logistics.
