Jenkins Elementary academic team honored as county champions; board recognizes students and coach

The Jenkins Independent Board of Education recognized the Jenkins Elementary academic team as county champions during its Dec. 16 meeting and presented certificates to team members.
Coach Miss Gillum said the small team of roughly six students outscored larger teams in county quick-recall rounds and written assessments. She named team members Carson Watts, Zane Sturgill, Jamieson Hayes, Elijah Adams, Jimmy Bentley and Hudson Hall, and singled out Carson Watts and Jamieson Hayes for top individual placements in subject-area assessments.
"This group of boys, they're phenomenal in the classroom, and they are also phenomenal with the academic team," Miss Gillum said, praising older team members for mentoring the newcomer and boosting his confidence. She noted the team will compete in district competition with Pike County at Dorton Elementary in February.
Students also thanked Coach Gillum and the board for support; certificates were presented at the meeting.
The board and staff congratulated the students and encouraged community support for the upcoming district competition.
