Fayette County highlights school health initiatives and names December Kids Champion

During the superintendent's report, Fayette County Public Schools highlighted district health and wellness work funded in part by a CDC grant and local partnerships, including expanded nurse coverage, school-based clinics in 11 facilities, plans to restore dental and vision services and a local Healthy Schools assessment roadmap.
Angela Clark, Healthy Schools specialist, said eight district schools were recognized through the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and described objectives to develop wellness committees, action plans and a district Healthy Schools Assessment Dashboard. "We actually had 8 of our schools...we announced, America's Healthiest Schools," Clark said.
The board also presented the December Kids Champion award to Markierra Smith, a lead custodian at Morton Middle School, acknowledging her daily support of students and staff and her community involvement.
Board members praised nurses, health and PE staff and underscored that school-based clinics often act as primary care access points for some families. District staff said they will continue to refine summer health programs and expand inclusive physical education training for special education students.
