Planning commission approves Riverton Subdivision final plat amid calls to broaden traffic‑study scope

The Ascension Parish Planning Commission approved the final plat for Riverton Subdivision (second filing) on Dec. 10 after staff confirmed final inspection and paperwork were complete.
Derek Murphy of Quality Engineering and Surveying, representing SLC, told the commission the final inspection was complete and all paperwork had been submitted. “We've done all our paperwork. We've turned everything in, and we're here tonight asking for your approval on the final plat,” Murphy said.
Commissioner Villa said he had pulled the item to comment on traffic‑study practice in rapidly changing parts of Ascension Parish. Villa said some traffic studies focus narrowly on the immediate area and may not account for announced projects nearby that will affect traffic patterns. He urged staff and the board to consider expanding traffic‑study ranges when warranted to better protect residents.
Planning staff responded that they have the authority to request upgraded traffic studies under the ordinance when particular findings warrant a threshold 1 or threshold 2 study, and that they would consider Villa's comment for future projects. After discussion, the commission approved the Riverton final plat on a motion (mover identified in the record) and a second; the motion passed by voice vote.
Commissioners and staff indicated no public speakers had registered on the item. Staff noted that, for other projects, outstanding traffic or drainage review items can be conditions for later approvals; in this case the Riverton representative said required inspections and paperwork were complete.
