Somerset County reviews fall 2025 matching‑grant applications; commissioners to act Dec. 3

"Your current balance is about $587,000 in the Community Benefit Fund," staff said, and noted roughly $140,000 of previously awarded grants remain open and staff expects about $360,000 to replenish the fund later in the year.
Applications reviewed included local nonprofit and municipal requests: Irving Tanning Community Center (Hartland) sought help replacing a large door; Bingham’s development corporation proposed interpretive panels for the old Canada Road scenic byway; the Federated Church requested funds to supply about 700 holiday gift boxes; Solon asked for site improvements at Williams Dam/Caracont Falls; and Anson requested rail‑removal and repaving work. Recreational and community projects included Palmyra Park Boosters (tennis/pickleball; second phase for playground equipment), Forks Area Trail Club (bridge replacement), New Portland Fairgrounds (electrical modernization), and Winslow Community Food Cupboard (cold storage to reduce food waste). Little Wonders Daycare, a for‑profit business, requested funding for a capacity expansion that would add 20 slots.
Commissioners asked focused questions about eligibility, scope and matching policy. Multiple commissioners stressed adherence to the program’s 50/50 matching rule and noted the panel will treat municipal maintenance requests more critically if they fit routine town responsibilities rather than community benefit criteria. Staff confirmed that award decisions are prescreening today and that all of the items will be listed as action items at the Dec. 3 meeting when commissioners may move to award, reduce, or reject amounts.
Next steps: staff will collect any missing budget clarifications from applicants (for example, the Federated Church budget), verify geographic/benefit scope (e.g., Winslow’s service area relative to Somerset County), and prepare dollar recommendations for the Dec. 3 action meeting.
