At its Dec. 15 meeting the Finney County commission took a series of administrative and governance actions, from digital‑security steps to workplace renovations and code updates.
The county clerk recommended the board authorize the chair to sign an authorization letter requesting responsibility for the .gov domain finneycountykansas.gov. Clerk staff said .gov domains are managed by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and are available at no charge to qualifying U.S. government organizations; the commission approved the authorization.
On licenses, the clerk presented two cereal malt beverage (CMB) license requests for Hobo Truckstop No. 2 and J Mart No. 1; both met licensing requirements and the board approved issuance. The clerk also asked the commission to authorize a conditional issuance for Maverick Truck Stop pending receipt of state stamps and paperwork; commissioners approved the conditional action so the vendor would not lapse between meetings.
County Attorney Nick requested approval of bid awards to replace carpeting and install new cubicles in the county attorney’s office, citing 25 years without upgrades and the need to improve recruiting and workspace. Staff presented two carpet bids (same manufacturer; lower bid roughly $12,000 less) and one cubicle bid; commissioners discussed involving facilities oversight in future bid reviews and asked that department purchasing policies be formalized. The commission approved the bids with direction to adopt written purchasing procedures.
On the proposed purchase of a replacement vehicle for the county attorney’s office, commissioners debated vehicle size, whether to pursue state contract pricing and to prefer local vendors. Chair tabled the vehicle purchase request and asked staff to return with additional bids (including smaller models) and state‑contract options.
Finally, following an executive session, county counsel presented a 10‑page package of proposed zoning regulation updates — including a new Article 36 — and the board voted to forward the redlined materials to the planning commission for review and recommendation.
What’s next: Clerk and IT will proceed with the .gov registration process; licensing approvals will be finalized upon clerk signoff; zoning‑code changes now enter the planning‑commission review process.
