Council approves SFCN cable-rate increase as company cites higher retransmission costs

Spanish Fork Council voted Dec. 9 to approve a proposed rate increase for the Spanish Fork Community Network (SFCN) cable television packages.
Jared, SFCN representative, told the council the basic package would rise by $3.77 (about 6.3%) to $62.84 per month and other tiers would increase proportionally, largely to absorb retransmission-consent and channel-cost increases. Premium channel lineups are contracted and will not change. SFCN said it will send mailers and postcards to affected customers with 30 days' notice; proposed effective date is Feb. 1, 2026.
Council members and staff discussed alternatives for customers, including indoor antennas for basic over-the-air channels and moving heavy users toward higher-internet tiers for streaming. Staff clarified SFCN's cable and internet operations are enterprise-funded and do not rely on general-fund tax dollars; fee revenue covers operations and O&M costs. Council approved the rate change by roll-call vote.
SFCN will proceed with customer notification and continue its scheduled coax decommissioning and fiber upgrades in 2026.
