Hillsdale County board approves process for local approval of Lake Pleasant Recycling facility

The Hillsdale County Board of Commissioners approved a county-level process to supply the local government approval letter EGLE requires for new waste facilities, clearing the way for Lake Pleasant Recycling to move its application forward.
Commissioner Doug presented the recommended steps: confirm local-unit approval (Jefferson Township has provided a letter), send the facility request to the Hillsdale County Materials Management Planning Committee for recommendation and, if recommended, bring a resolution to the county board authorizing the chair to sign a time-limited approval letter to submit to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE). Commissioners discussed timelines and settled on a 180-day approval window to allow for EGLE review timelines.
Paul Cunningham, owner of Lake Pleasant Recycling, had made public comment earlier in the meeting asking to keep prices down and emphasizing community benefit. Commissioners noted the county’s materials-management plan has state approval and that adding a local recycling facility would boost recycling metrics the state uses for funding benchmarks. The board moved to adopt the process and to have the materials-management committee meet in January, with any resulting resolution brought to the board at its first February meeting for final authorization.
