M State president urges early employer engagement as college expands training and supports

Carrie Brimhall, president of Minnesota State Community and Technical College (M State), spoke at the workforce summit in Fergus Falls about the college'9s role in regional workforce development. Brimhall said M State'9s campuses, including Fergus Falls, Detroit Lakes, Moorhead and Wadena, offer 70 degree programs (25 of them online) and a large noncredit workforce-training arm that provides more than 110,000 annual training hours.
Brimhall highlighted supports that help students complete credentials and enter local jobs: on-campus navigators, emergency grants, food pantries and close partnerships with employers through advisory boards. "The call to action is to hire our graduates to keep them here," she said, urging employers to offer internships, job shadows and paid work experiences.
She also described a new tuition-free scholarship opportunity coming to the Fergus Falls campus and said many M State students are already employed while enrolled, so early engagement increases employer success in hiring local graduates. Brimhall answered audience questions about student integration into the community and how employers and residents can make students feel welcome.
Brimhall closed by inviting employers to join advisory boards and to contact M State workforce development staff to tailor training for incumbent workers.
